For the last final stages of Daryl's project I was asked to re-size the chair which has been done and also to add a step ladder for the Prof to walk up to match the height of Mort's chair. The image below is the design and texture for the ladder but the texture might change into a brown Lambert to make the model look 2D. This image shows the new chair with the step ladder in position.

The group decided that the book case needed to be duplicated due to the background looking empty, therefore Simon made a duplication of the bookshelf and I then changed the colour of the shelf along with making the objects on both shelf different so there not completely the same.

When I changed the chair to fit the character and scene, Daryl then asked if I could put a rig in the chair so when the character Mort gets put on it, the chair will move backwards and forward. To add more comedy. This is a quick play blast of a practise shot:
After doing the simple design and model for our chair, me, Daryl and Simon spoke about the chair and agreed that the chair I did first time round looked like a dentist chair and I should incorporate my old chair with the new one and I can up with these new designs:

During the third term we realised the chair we originally had was to small for the animated chair and needed to be bigger. Due to the chair looking mis-shaped and out of place, the group decided that the chair needs to be re-do. This is a much simpler design and we are able to make the chair wider or bigger without the shape looking awkward.

I have been contributing in Daryl group by colouring in the animated frames and put them into Flash, where they have been put in order and timed out as finished animated pieces.

Cat Animation

I designed a 2D animation cat that was skinny so that you could see the movement in the shoulders and legs when the cat walks. These are the three improved animation of the cat walk cycle and the jump.

The first animation is of the cat walking and then jumping into the air:

The second Animation is the cat walking slow and then jumping into the air and turning into a bird:

The third animation is the same as the one above but a quicker walk. I think the third animation is the best out of the three because the cat walks smoothly and then goes into a fat jump and then become a bird:

Changes in Sal Project

Sal's Group has changed the idea of there story production. We were gonna have 3D models made in Maya and then have the environment done in a program called View, this was to make the environment realistic. But due to come problems our group is now shorter and have decided to do the whole film in 2D along with my 3D secondary animation models. The film is now a moving image piece. Chris, Sal and Bart have done some practice animatics to show what our new film would look like.
From the animatic the group asked me to finish animating the butterfly and bee, flying in different directions and then add them into the backgrounds on after effects, also they asked if I could animate in 2D a cat walking and jumping into the air. From the animatic you can see what the Sal and Chris wants the cat to do. I might be also animating the drawn birds I have done.

Below are some designs I have done so far from my list:

I want to colour in the birds and add a fur effect on them to make the 2D birds look real. I found the 3D bird I modelled in Maya really hard to texture but because of the change in the design of the film the bird will now be 2D, which I think will be easier for me because I am a strong drawer. By Monday I will have the bee and butterfly animated and then I just have to finish off the cat animation.

Daryl asked the group if they could contribute into colouring in the 2D frames and then put them in Flash to key the animated frames.

For this we used illustrator and live traced the frames with one colour logo. Then we copied the frames into Flash, with the PAL setting of 25 frames a second and 720 by 576.

The three short animated clips below are the ones I have done for the group, but I will also be doing more of these frames when Al and James have finished there 2D animation. I had to tidy the pictures with rubber so that the images looked crisp and not rough round the edges.

From my experiments I took these three images that I liked during the colour pallets. I wanted the bird to be red and I thought the red fur worked well with the model; I also liked the contrast between the purple and blue mixed fur and the brown fur worked well. Because of this I am still unsure which one I would use, so I shall ask my group mates. But after speaking with them on Friday they are doing 2D animation and having my 3D animation in the background. I think that if I can not make this bird work then I might do the animation in 2D.

I felt that the bird texture I had originally was not up to a high standard and I wanted to re-do the texture by added fur to the bird. This is because birds have fur on there bodies and feathers on their wings and I believed that's why my bird did not look right. My texture was too tiled, So in Maya8 I used the fur tool to begin trying out tests on the bird model. as you can see from the pages below, these are some of my tests (making the fur shorter and ticker) also a range of colour pallets to see which colour suited the bird better.

This model has both the original texture and the fur tool applied. I like the idea of being able to see the feathers underneath the fur but I also think it doesn't work. So I applied the fur without my texture and I used the colour black Lambert as a base colour, and then used the fur.

The bird went from this image below to the images above to make the bird more realistic, I found the texture I had was to tiled:

Bee Playblast

I have blend shaped the bee because it is secondary animation and may not be seen up close so I did not rig the model. The films I have watched on you tube of bees show that they move everything apart from there bodies. These plablasts are pratices of the animated bee, to see if the blendshapes work and also if I need to work on the bee more. By doing these playblast give me the help I need to make the animation better, to give the film a better quality.

These two pictures are from the designer Temara de Lempicka: I had the idea of building a canvas in Maya8 and then adding this image which I have changed in photoshop, I took the image and used the tools on photoshop, the Burn, Blur, Eraser tools and Filter to make the image look like a canvas design, and put the image on top of a burn wooden back drop, to show the image has been warn away and detoryed:

This was another Idea I took from the designer Eileen Gray: the side table was built because I liked the fact that it was different from the over furniture I have built so far:

The broken Piano, was something that was an idea of mine only because I thought it would really good to have a low poly model that have a lot of detail inside the object, so when it is broken a viewer can see inside the of the object making the object look real istead of a block:

I really wanted to model a water fountain because it was something different from what I usually model. So I firsty built it and then added Booleans to break down the fountain making it look detoryed over the years:

When researching into bugatti furniture I realised they did alot on baby cots so it gave me the idea of modelling a babies cot, with different ways of it looking broken:

I took the ideas of both these chairs from the designer Eileen Gray and have used Booleans in Maya8 to take sections out of the chairs to make them look old and broken. But when I apply textures then it will look better.

I have been modelling, desks and then changing them into broken desks, I have done the same to two units and a broken table:

When researching into the Art Deco I found that most buildings, furniture, cars and paintings were taken from the styles of Art Deco: Jared gave me some names that were connected with making furniture under the influences of Art Deco from these names and my own research I found a few people that have influenced my work and it shows though the modelling I have produced.

Temara De Lempicka: Art Deco has become very popular within 2008/09, most of the card shops such as Clinton's Cards have been selling Art Deco cards up and down the market along with merchandise. These images are the original Art Deco women designs, before they have been made into glamorous models. I wanted to use one of these designs and build it into a canvas, and put it into the environment to show the era in which Chris wants to show.

When researching I found that most building that are well known to most of the public are done under Art Deco, these images below are well known building, the Odeon cinema, MacDonald's, hotels, famous buildings and museums.

Bugatti Furniture: was called the over the top Art Deco designs, these were more detailed and used cultural influences which have bee Incorporated into their furniture.

Raymond Loewy: built and designed cars and trains, during the '50s when Art Deco styles were very popular, most designers took on the influences from this type of style and developed creations and made them their own.

Eileen Gray, was a designer that used the styles of Art Deco in all her furniture developments.

Below I have made a mood-board to show the furniture I have been looking at as inspiration.

Chris Group- Chris colour will be Red: During the second term Chris Director and Al Producer of the film Junk Food asked me to join their group due to dissertation taking up the time of members from his group, they asked me to model some of the broken stuff which will be shown in the background to build up the element of junk.

Al told me to model things that were designed in the '50s and to look at the designs taken by Art Deco. So far I have modelled a few things but will be adding more models and also these models will have textures mapped by next week.

For Sal's project I was given the task to model and animate a bird/bee/butterfly. The hardest to model was the bird because of the wings. I designed a quick bird model and begun to design the wings but they did not look like birds wings nor did it make it easier to design them to fly so I took the old wings and changed them for a layered design, where I can bend the wings and it has been build for an easier texture because its a flat plane.

I have done a few tests of the wings opening and closing using blend shapes and also to see how it could fly. So far I think that it is a good step in the right direction, I believe that the wings look better but they are also easier to work with so I was able to make it fly though blend shapes, I have also taken some screen shots to have a look at my developments and a short play blast.

The image below was the first idea for the wings. The idea was to make the wings look like they had feathers coming directly out of the bone of the wing. From above it looks like a good idea but from the side/front/back they did not look right for the structure of the bird model and would have been a problem when trying to open and close the wings. The images above are the new wings I have been working on.

Bird/Butterfly and the Bee Improvements and Research

I went to Leeds Castle and looked at how the birds move and the movement of the wings, I have begun modelling the bird but I could not seem to get the wings correct, therefore I went to the birds of prey to get an idea on the way birds move and use there wings, it turns out the wings are layers that fold in and out which I need to incorporate on my bird model.

The developments on my bird ideas: The model of the bird is really bad it needs a lot of work, mainly the wings, but its a block out of the frame I want.

My butterfly model is really good I have managed to build it the way I wanted it to look ana also I have blend shaped it so that it can fly. I have made a quick play blast to show my development:

My bee model looks very well made I have enjoyed building this model because it was something new for me. I am on the stage were I can now texture the bee and the butterfly and will hopefully make it fly by next week:

Improvement On Daryls Environment

These images are the development on the environment from the orginal blockout to an improved model, which has been toon shaded, because Daryl wanted the environment to look 2D, with Lambert colour textures.

During this term I have taken my recent blockout environment and while the environment did work for the animation, Daryl wanted to changes some of the modelling to make the characters move around more freely and get from place to place easier because of the 2D characters going into a 3D environment.

Harrison placed some notes on one of my environment pictures so both of us could have a visual on what needs to be changed. Shown below:

For Sal's Project I have been asked not only to develop more backgrounds that will be built up in the Vue program but do some modelling and animating.

Sal wants the short film to look like the characters are in a forest by having some animals/insects to build up a life-like environment. because they was a lot of people doing the environment I was given an opportunity to drawn, model and hopefully animate these small characters. I want to be an environment designer but I also want to have skills in all different sections of animation which I am now able to do in Sal's group.

I took the storyboard picture that Sal and Chris had done and added colour, flowers, grass and built the scene up in PhotoShop. I then changed the colour of the pictures to give the picture a lighter or darker mood depending on what direction Sal want the film to go in:

R C Martin's Resume is a self-taught landscape artist I researched him during A-Level's and found his oil/water colouring painted really captured nature without the use of pencil marks and limited colour pallet.

Using the Wacom Tablet I have come up with some designs for the flowers and the natural environment: for some off the drawings I have used the blend tool to make an abstract painting of the flowers below using the influeance of the artist R C Martin's Resume. He does oil and watercolour landscaps which influenaced me into do some painted flowers like this artist.

Daryl gave me two ideas he had for the rooms in the set. on is the chill out Denist room and the other is a Scienist room. I took his two pictures and made changes and adding more objects to make the room look more like a Denist/science room.

The above I found on you tube are clips from the show Home Improvement and Suit Life goes Hollywood. I found these clips because I thought that the scene could help me with creating a studio set for Daryl's work.

Colour Guild-(Forest)

When finding a colour chart to work from, I found that in the group environment colour scheme, that we will be using so many different colours, mainly blue, brown and green because of the project is a nature environment and they will be the main colours but also for the plants, mushrooms, foadstools, spider webs and other enchanted aspects that will come later in the environment development. Then there will be a verity of bright colours including reds, orange, yellow, purple and pink.

When thinking of what type of enchanted forest to do, I begun reasearching into dark, enchanted, fairytale woods and forests that could work with Sal's ideas. Two Colours/Two Different groups

during the week I have gone to my other groups and have foound that they don't need my help until next term when the production side is about to start so I have been doing concept art fro my main group which is Sal's Group. So far I am enjoying what we are doing everyone in the group work really well together and we are making some great results.
Anna's Group that are doing the ride have said that they may not have much 3D environment for me to do and that their finding it hard to find something for me to do and on that note I said that for now to worry about the main people in her group and if there is something for me to do then let me know, so because of this I then began to ask around the other groups if they needed a 3D environment designer.

Daryal and I had a conversation on his projected called The Prof, and he said he needed help with his backgrounds. After I saw his idea and met with the people in his group I decided to join Daryal's group and work with Harrion on the main evironment background.So for this term Daryal has asked for me to do some concept work and we will go from their. Since I am in two group I will be using this blog to show both projects by having the writting in two different colours to make it clear that certain work are for certain groups by the colour of the text.

After looking at all the pitches, I want to get into as many groups as possible to have a variety of environments for my show reel.

When I asked my classmates about what their projects entail, the environments they wanted are very similar and I wanted to have loads of different environments to work with. I ended up picking three groups that I could see myself working for to make really good environments designs they are: Sal, Chris and Anna.

I have chosen my main group which is Sal's project because I wanted to have some 2D work as I have not got any 2D work in my show reel. The other two groups have 3D modelling in there projects and I wanted to also to have more 3D work because I am very strong with 3D environments.

Sal sent me an email with the ideas he has for his environments. I then started to design some concept art, which will also help with the development of the storyboards:

Below is the initial outline of what is needed for the environments.

include water of sorts, think enchanted forest I would like the background to be quite stylised, perhaps ink and watercolour - ref. The Tale of How. This is a good example of how I would like the backgrounds layered. Another good reference is The nightmare Before Christmas although too dark in its colour palette, i quite like the style of the trees. Think about making everything have a dream like quality to them. Try and add lots of little details e.g.toadstools, cobwebs, leaves that can drop to the ground, if everything is created on separate layers then they can be animated in aftereffects. Another good example is the game Little Big Planet. For the skylines digital photography will probably be used.

When Sal gave me the list above I began to look on You Tube For Nightmare Before Christmas and The Tale Of How, both of these films have what Sal is looking. The 2D environment have a mixture of layers to make the 2D environments look 3D or to give it a enchanted dream affect that relates to the poem.
